Y C Deveshwar and ITC Limited

Deveshwar, or “Yogi” to his close aides, was born on February 4, 1947, in Lahore, British India. He belonged to a modest family and his father was a government employee. Deveshwar received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, in 1968. The same year, he joined the then Imperial Tobacco Company of India Ltd. as a management pupil. During 1968-1974, ITC was primarily engaged in the growth and consolidation of the Cigarettes and Leaf Tobacco businesses.
